Tails.com Dog Food Review

Hello everyone, over the last month or so we have taken advantage of the Tails.com free two week trial for our Jug Dog, Jeff. It’s been a month or so as since then we have decided to continue with Tails.com trial and we now pay for it. Read on if you want to find out what Tails.com is, what they offer and why we’ve decided to continue using them past the free trial period.

Who are Tails.com?

Tails.com dog food are suppliers and providers of bespoke dog food. They will take a consultation and ask a few questions using an online questionnaire about your dog and their dietary requirements, they will then make a recommendation on dry (or wet food) and send it direct to your door when you need it. Their food is geared towards what your dog loves and what’s healthy for them.

Many of Tails.com’s employees are dog lovers and owners as you can see from their about us page. They’ve also got educated nutritionists and vets which certainly helps to put your mind at ease that the food they provide isn’t junk. It’s not just humans that need to watch what they eat!

They’re a relatively new company who trialled their first deliveries in 2014, as somewhat of a business owner myself I always try to support young UK start ups.

What is their service?

There’s a video on their site that better explains the service here.

In my own words – Tails.com create a bespoke blend of nutritious food made specifically for your dog. Many breeds of dogs have different requirements – some are more active, some may have allergies and others may need to pay particular attention to what they eat because of age or health issues. Whatever your dog needs to the most they work hard to provide it in a handy delivery straight to your door. Essentially –

  • Nutritious and healthy food
  • Delivered direct to your door
  • Managed portions
  • Flavour to suit your dog’s taste buds
  • Personalised
  • Highly customisable

It arrives at your door in a convenient box with the bag inside as well as the measuring scoop. Unfortunately, we threw away the box with the scoop inside so we’ve been managing the portions by hand. D’oh!

Enough about the company or the food. What do we at JugDog.co.uk think about the product and

Jeff with Tails.com Bag

more importantly what did Jeff think?

Firstly, we found the online questionnaire dead easy to complete and we were pleased that the questions were not about us at all but were about what dog likes and what the dog needs. We found this to be a nice touch as we care deeply about keeping our dog happy and it was clear that Tails.com also cared about the happiness of the end user.

We made sure to answer the questions accurately and honestly and in the picture on the left is his profile. and on the right is his nutrition recommended. To be honest, we gave honest answers and we trusted their judgement and we went with their recommendations.

After that it was all about setting up the delivery and away we go.

Delivery was prompt and came in a secure box with everything inside. We received dry food only as it didn’t suggest wet food despite us specifying Jeff has normally eaten wet and dry. We still mix the Tails.com dry food with Pedigree wet food pouches. This was particularly annoying as we still needed to go to the shops to buy the wet stuff despite Tails.com trying to be as convenient as possible. A source at Tails.com said they weren’t sure if they were going to be offering wet food on the free trial so due to this the review is essentially only half complete.

  • Pedigree Real Meals are the optimum meal for man's best friend, with healthy nutrients and a tasty gravy sauce / Good as a stand alone meal or combined with kibble

Now, the product. Jeff loves it. The kibble comes with different types inside as you can see from the picture, I liked the fact that it was varied and so does my dog. He wolfs it down and quite often asks for more…which we occasionally oblige to.

Because Jeff is quite young trying something new can sometimes lead to disaster – we can buy a whole bag of kibble and if he doesn’t like it he won’t eat it and we just have to throw it away. Other times Jeff can get quite ill and or tired if the food just isn’t good. With Tails dog food this has not been the case and he has been in great spirit since.

He is well behaved, he has no problems with digestion and his coat looks and feels healthy. A big victory for us!

Because of the way the delivery works we no longer panic when the food runs out because it arrives within 1-2 days before we need it, the last shipment we had to adjust because he ran out sooner than we expected and the easy to use website allowed me to move the delivery forward.

As for the price, we pay in the region of £6-7 per bag which lasts us for just under the month. Considering it’s a bespoke service and the kibble is of higher quality to what the supermarkets offer we found this superb value for money. Is this likely to change if they become more popular? Who knows, but for now we have no complaints about the product or the price.

To summarise, we absolutely love the service that Tails.com provide and Jeff loves to eat it. Although the wet food issue is a sticking point and may well be resolved at some point we have decided to carry on past the free trial as it has offered us superior food delivered conveniently at a very competitive price. You simply couldn’t ask for more.

Sadly, I feel the customer service from this company is lacking. One of my dogs has developed severe ‘itching’ after 5 weeks on the recommended food from this company and I was told that the nutritionists would ‘look into it’ – which leaves me with a bag of food that is useless to me and facing the purchase of an alternative food – doubling my bill this month. Customer services asked what food I was using before tails.com and then referred back to the original online questionnaire I completed, saw it was James Wellbeloved and stated ‘oh, well that’s hypoallergenic’. My dog has never required hypoallergenic food and the food was purchased for the flavour as opposed to that aspect. I did explain that I am not a vet, nor a canine nutritionist and, when considering what blend of food my dog required, is this not something their ‘nutritionists’ should have picked up on otherwise what is the purpose of the questionnaire? I was made to feel that this is entirely my fault and I’m a very unhappy customer who is now considerably out of pocket.

Sadly my tale is NOT Favorable with Tails.com either.
Our dog had been on Tails.com supplied food for some time and when we received are latest bag, i noticed the Kibble looked different from the previous bag.
After approx a week on the Latest bag or dog started to suffer from indigestion and excessively licking his lips. This went on for a few days, steadily he was getting worse, not thinking about the food being any different we took our Dog to the Vets, They checked him over and did some tests, then told us to put him to take him off Tails.com food and put him on a bland diet. After 2 days happily his symptoms subsided, so we began to feed him his Tails.com diet, once again within 48 hours his symptoms returned.
We decided to put him back on his previous food and he has been fine.

    I made contact with Matt at Tails.com and this was the reply below;

“”Thanks for getting in touch. I am very sorry to hear that Toby did not enjoy his latest batch of food. I can confirm that one of our chicken only kibbles in the blend had been replaced with a chicken and beef flavoured kibble. This will have been the change you noticed in the composition of the blend and it took place to account for Toby’s adapting nutritional needs.”

Now am i just being sensitive??? but surely all of there customers should have been notified of this change when they supplied the food as it happens Toby doesnt like or tolerate Beef or flavoured products.

So i got lumbered with a £48 Vet bill and days/nights worrying about our dog, and there reply was we will replace your current bag and knock 50% off your next one.

  5. I totally agree with Catherine Salmon exactly the same thing happened to me, I could have written the same statement. We are out of pocket but I will give my bag of food to a rescue centre.

    Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I sent an email to Tails.com about the bad tails.com reviews here for an official response – I’ve not heard anything back yet which is very disappointing.

For the record, we are not a part of Tails.com.

Not a bad company at first.
But do not try and change your order. My dog does not eat a lot of biscuits, so with an ever increasing supply of them mounting up, I asked if my next order could just be wet food. I received an email saying they were sorry I had run out of wet food and could send a top-up.
Further replies from Matt were rather rude. In a nutshell they cannot send wet food without the biscuits. He even asked what scoop size I was using. Does that matter if my dog wont eat them?
After saying that i wished to make a complaint he told me that Team Leaders were very busy and wouldn’t get back to me as he had given me good advice.
I have now given them the best advice…. CANCEL MY ORDER.

    Customer service score ……0

  8. Hello Catherine,
My dog too has picked up a bit of an itch and also a sensitive tail. Also a little patch of dry skin on his rump … I wonder if they are connected?
I did not think to question tails.com directly but think I might now… did you ever get a satisfactory reply?
My dog also eats kelp (seaweed) roots too, advised by vets it is not detrimental ( beyond smelly farts!! ) and am awaiting a reply from ails enquiry…
    Curiouser and curiouser…

Why do you feed pedigree wet food pouches when they are full of crap?? Why feed a good quality (although tails.com to me isnt that great quality) but add this to his food??

  10. The Jug Dog

    Hi Rachel,

This is now a relatively old article and Jeff is no longer fed Pedigree pouches. However, we do not appreciate your aggressive and condescending tone here. If you’d like to contribute then stay positive, we noticed you have commented on our choice but not mentioned your own.

    Hi

I have been in touch with Tails. com due to the substandard kibbles that I have received in the last few months. They all had small white hairs embedded into the kibble. (cooked or compressed). I have have had very prolonged emails saying can we have photos, etc. They seem in no rush to sort this out and I am realising that my dog started itching at a similar time this problem started. Also I realise it’s all happened since they have joined purina. Please ensure you check your dogs bag of kibbles as the hairs are quite obtrusive and if hairs are mixed in then what else, very very worrying

Very uneasy about all thes comments , Iv received tails for Nellie now for nearly 12 months , and haven’t had any bother , Iv ordered treats with my next order and will only want them for this month , although they will go on being delivered , if I don’t cancel . Which brings me to my only problem , Iv tried to vary my delivery before now , and got nowhere , hope i will have better luck this time .

Our Teddy loves Tails. It was the first food he really took to after he went off the Royal Canin he came with. I’ve recommended Tails to everyone and have never had a bad experience with them. I find their customer service excellent. But I’m writing this a few years after the first post so maybe now they’re a more established company their processes have improved. I called them and asked if any of their food had changed as a direct result of being bought by Purina and they assured me it hadn’t. I’m definitely keeping Teddy on Tails. But, we’re about to get another dog of a different breed and am reading as much as possible about the different brands of dog food.

  14. My 2 year old Shih Tzu Rosie was a very fussy eater but since I have been using Tails she clears every single bit of food she also seems to like the all the different flavours I give Tails 10/10

  15. I have used tails com-for 2years now and this last two lots she’s not eating this, something changed with this, I tried to delay last lot and said could do for 5days but still didn’t delay , I am getting over run with this now , my other dog is on another kind which I am now mixing with tails and since this my dogs stopped scooting and her annal glands are much better, will try it for a little longer mixing it, it could just be a change of ingredients which I am told tails now use ,
